Muon radiography experiments on the subway overburden structure detection

Muon radiography is an innovative and non-destructive technique for internal density structure imaging, based on measuring the attenuation of cosmic-ray muons after they penetrate target. Due to strong penetration ability muons, detection range muon can reach order hundreds meters or even kilometers. Using a portable detector composed plastic scintillators silicon photomultipliers, we performed short-duration (1 h) flux scanning experiment overburden above platform tunnel Xiaoying West Road subway station under construction. With observation direction facing up, placed north side track moved eastward from section inside section. The length 264 m total 21 locations are observed. By comparing observed predicted values survival ratio at different locations, accurately detects jump in thickness interface Furthermore, unknown anomalies caused by randomly piles lightweight bricks passage mouth detected confirmed later. This verifies feasibility using natural quickly detect abnormal structures tunnel, shows that has broad application prospects safety other similar aspects.
